Upcoming Programs
Book Discussion
On Thursday, March 8, 2012, we will hold this year's annual members only book discussion. The topic will be Islam.
We are especially pleased to have S. Zakiya Islam as our facilitator for this program.
The emphasis of the WIL program is on learning about Islam, its roots, holy tenets and practices, the Koran and in particular the varying views on women across the Muslim world.
The book selected is Islam: A Short History by Karen Armstrong. The book is less than 200 pages and focuses on the history of Islam rather than an explanation of the faith. Our able instructor and program leader is a practicing Muslim and Adjunct Professor of World Religion at Temple University this year. Zakyia recommends another of Armstrong's books Muhammad: A Prophet for Our Time, which she suggests may be more to the point of our discussion.
In preparation for the evening's discussion, you are encouraged to read either of Armstrong's books or any other on Islam as your schedule allows. Zakiya will be able to address all the major components of Islam. There will be time for questions.
